Gary In the Morning, a local radio personality in my hometown of Stroudsburg PA was fired from his job today for facetiously using the same phrase that got Imus in so much trouble.

“The Phrase that pays” was a long running on-air game of his. And guess what this weeks phrase was?

Yup. “I’m a Nappy Headed something-or-other.” (I don’t want to get fired)

Gary WAS the voice of the Pocono’s for 17 years and contributed his free time to many local charities. But he’s no Imus. So he gets fired. Incidentally, WSBG’s Sister station WVPO will resume broadcasting the syndicated “Imus in the morning ” show when Imus’ suspension is complete.

I believe both Don Imus and Gary Smith were wrong for the racial jokes but there is a double standard. Black people tell these types of jokes and they are not fired. Had they told an equally insulting Christian or Jewish joke where would be the outrage? I do not think he should have been fired. I also believe that true power in changing these types of jokes lay in the listeners. The ones who complained have the power of the dial. Rather than turning to censorship let the rating correct the langue. My personal opinion is in the famous words of Rodney King “Why can’t we all just get along?” Humor at the expense of someone’s race or religion is just plain wrong.

I think the reson Gary got fired, was because his bad joke did not fit into the “demographic” of the station. Years ago, WSBG appeald to a younger crowd that would have not been so easily offended.

Now WSBG’s format is one that appeals to thirty-somethings that listen on the way to work or on the way to the supermarket with children in the back seat…. THEY could possibly find the joke unacceptable.

people almost expect those kind of things from Imus… he just made the wrong joke at the wrong time.. and he has almost completley skated free on the scores of other racist jokes he made in the past.

It also made thenational media via AP but there was no mention that the station(s) would continues to
carry Imus’s show after it resumes. Are there any media types In Allentown with any brains?
